The Right Choice

Michael Choice

You don’t have to look very far to find a gem on the diamond. He may not be a big name, but he has plenty of game.

UT-Arlington junior Michael Choice is one of the best college baseball players you don’t know about. However, opposing teams know him all too well.

The Mansfield Timberview alum is projected to be a 1st round draft pick in this year’s MLB Draft. Baseball America tabbed him number 20 on their “Top 100 College MLB Draft Prospects” list and the preseason Southland Conference Player of the Year. Last year Choice became the first player in UTA history to play for the USA Baseball National Team, hitting .350 with 3 homers and 13 RBI’s. All this after batting .413 as a sophomore.

Choice is one of 50 amateur players selected to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List. Needless to say he is being noticed.

The Mavericks have struggled out of the gates, going 3-5 in their first 8 games. One of those losses was to 22nd ranked Oklahoma in Norman earlier this week. Choice did his part in keeping UTA in the game, going 2-4 with a triple. So far this year, Choice is hitting .393 with 3 homers and 10 RBI’s.

The talented centerfielder has been flying under the radar during his Maverick career. That’s changing more and more when Choice steps onto the field. It’s just a matter of time before the secret is out.

*Jason Mitchell and Adam Boydston combined to strike out 26 batters in a 14-inning, 1-0 victory over Missouri State last week, tying the NCAA all-time record for combined strikeouts by a pitching staff. The hats they wore during the game will go to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock.
