They’re a team that doesn’t make headlines, at least not outside of Denton. But the Mean Green of North Texas has a basketball program that’s quietly making waves.
Fresh off a 24-9 season that included a conference tournament title and a Sun Belt Conference West Division title, head coach Johnny Jones has plenty to smile about.
The core of the team is made up of underclassmen. UNT will have two of the top 20 scorers in school history returning in Josh White and Tristan Thompson, plus the Sun Belt’s leading rebounder and only double-double man in George Odufuwa. And you can add in the home court advantage. The Super Pit has been a house of horrors for opponents the last few seasons.
Both White and Thompson have no problem producing in pressure situations. White hit the game-winning shot in the finals of the Sun Belt tournament, while Thompson scored a career high 28 points in the Mean Green’s loss to Kansas State in the NCAA tournament.
UNT made its second trip to the Big Dance in the last four years. They may have struggled against K-State but it was a learning experience. A chance to play on center stage with all eyes on them can be nothing but beneficial heading into next season.
The Mean Green tasted the spotlight, and they like the flavor.
