Pick To Click Series: Boston and Texas

Red Sox vs Rangers

A crucial series for both teams this weekend, with possible playoff implications on the line.

The Rangers appear to be in good shape in the A-L West. They have a 7 ½ game lead over the Angels and 8 games over Oakland. But a downward spiral during the stretch run could bring those teams closer to the top. The Rangers just split a 2-game series with the Yankees, but could have won both if it wasn’t for the bullpen falling apart. Then again, they could have lost both for the same reason.

Beantown has been hit hard by injuries throughout the entire season. It almost isn’t fair, yet the Sox are not completely out of the A-L East race. They find themselves 5 ½ games out of first, with the Yankees and Rays in front of them. And they are only 4 behind the Rays in the Wild Card race. The return of Josh Beckett helps with the starting rotation, but the loss of Kevin Youkilis hurts the line-up. Red Sox Nation can’t wait for Dustin Pedroia to return from injury to bolster a revolving door line-up.

Here’s a look at the pitching match-up for this weekend’s 3-game series:

Friday: Josh Beckett (3-2, 6.21) vs Tommy Hunter (9-1, 3.01)

Saturday: John Lester (12-7, 2.94) vs Colby Lewis (9-8, 3.37)

Sunday: Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-3, 4.09) vs C-J Wilson (10-5, 3.30)

The Ballpark in Arlington will no doubt be packed with both Rangers and Sox fans. The Sox may be hurt, but they are scappy and never give up. In my opinion, this will be a very entertaining series.

My pick: Boston takes 2 of 3.
