AT&T Stadium To Host Alvarez Fight

AT&T Stadium seems like the perfect stage for a championship fight featuring Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The 26-year old Mexican boxer will drop weight in order to return to the junior middleweight division and take on WBO champion Liam Smith of England September 17 at the home of the Cowboys. In case you’re wondering, the Cowboys are on the road to face the Washington Redskins that week.

It sounds like Arlington beat out the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the fight, hoping to reclaim the magic Manny Pacquiao brought to the stadium in 2010. Pacquiao headlined two cards in Arlington, which both drew over 40-thousand fans.

Alvarez is considered one of the best boxers in the world, taking a 47-1-1 record with 33 KO’s into the championship fight against Smith, who is unbeaten at 23-0-1 with 13 KO’s. Since his loss to Floyd Mayweather, Alvarez has gone on a tear. Earlier this year, Alvarez moved up to the middleweight division and beat Amir Khan in a sixth-round knockout. Prior to that, he beat James Kirkland and veteran Miguel Cotto.

Rumors are that the big money fight between Alvarez and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin would have been at AT&T Stadium, but the matchup was postponed to at least 2017.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wanted to bring a fight featuring Alvarez to AT&T Stadium, and reportedly met with Oscar de la Hoya, who runs Golden Boy Promotions, a few days ago. The choices came down to Arlington or Las Vegas.

Once again, Jerry apparently got what Jerry wanted.
