The good news is Jordan Spieth made the cut at The Open Championship.

The bad news? He’s got some work to do to even have a shot this weekend.

Spieth weathered the rain and wind at Royal Troon on Friday to finish at 4-over, just one shot above the cut line. He’s 14 shots behind clubhouse leader Phil Mickelson going into weekend play.

Even though Spieth admitted the chances of catching Mickelson is slim at best, he does have a goal this weekend.  Use this time to prepare for the next few weeks.

“At this point if I make the cut, I’m looking to put nice, smooth, solid swings, very confident putts on it to lead into the PGA Championship,” Spieth told The Golf Channel. “Because I know my chances here are likely finished.”

Spieth is looking to improve his recent play in majors. He’s 17-over in his last nine rounds with no under-par cards, compared to 60-under with 15 under-par rounds in his first 17 rounds beginning in 2015.

Third round coverage starts at 6 a.m. CST Saturday on NBC. Mickelson is the leader at 10-under, one shot over Henrik Stenson.
