Gallo Returns to the Rangers Lineup

Joey Gallo

Gallo-mania has once again returned to Arlington.

With designated hitter Prince Fielder likely out for the season and heading towards another neck surgery, the Texas Rangers made the call and brought up Joey Gallo from Triple-A Round Rock Tuesday.

It’s Gallo’s second stint with the Rangers this season. The 22-year old made a brief appearance as a pinch-hitter back in May. He’s spent most of the season with the Express, hitting .246 with 19 home runs and 47 RBIs in 70 games. Gallo was on a hot streak recently in Round Rock, homering in three of his last five games.

Having played both third base and left field in both the majors and minors, Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Gallo will now see time at first base with the Fielder injury. The Rangers actually now have a little more flexibility with Gallo, Jurickson Profar, Mitch Moreland and Ryan Rua able to play various positions. Gallo switched over to first a couple of months ago down in Round Rock.

Gallo was briefly considered the toast of the town during his first stint with the Rangers last season. In his major league debut, the young slugger went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, becoming the first Rangers to knock in four runs in his major league debut.

Things cooled off once opposing teams developed a book on him. The strikeouts started piling up, which led to Gallo being sent back down to work on making better contact.

This time around, Gallo finds himself playing an important role in the middle of a pennant race. The Rangers recent struggles have allowed the Houston Astros to get within striking distance in the A.L. West. Gallo adds power to a lineup lacking in that department.  When he connects, the ball has a tendency to travel very far.

The Rangers top prospect now has a chance to shine on the big stage as the Rangers make a push to repeat as division champs and try to lock up a playoff spot.
